How the Mix Hopper Refrigeration System Works
This Danfoss compressor only cools the mix in the hopper — it is a separate refrigeration circuit from the freezing cylinder. The refrigeration system includes this compressor, an EPR valve (evaporator pressure regulator), and a fixed orifice metering device (capillary tube). The mix hopper condenser fan motor is wired in series with the compressor. The power board supplies 208–230V power directly to the compressor.
How to Diagnose a Bad Mix Hopper Compressor
Since this compressor only cools the mix hopper, the first symptom of failure is elevated mix temperature in the hopper. Here is how the diagnostic chain works:
- The thermistor probe reads mix temperature in the hopper and reports to the logic board
- The logic board signals the power board to supply power to the compressor
- A ribbon cable connects the logic board to the power board
- If the compressor is shorted, it can damage the power board — always inspect the power board when replacing this compressor
- If the mix hopper condenser fan is not running, the compressor will not run (wired in series)
Common failure signs: mix hopper temperature alarm, warm or semi-frozen mix in the hopper, compressor not starting or cycling off on thermal overload.
