What Is a Shell Bearing?
The shell bearing is the part that the beater’s drive shaft passes through. Its main function is to seal ice cream from leaking out of the freezing barrel’s rear into the machine’s interior. It also prevents grease or contaminants from entering the product. A failed shell bearing compromises both machine performance and food safety.
How Do I Know If My Shell Bearing Needs Replacing?
The first sign is excessive leakage into the black slide-out drip trays, even with new drive shaft seals installed and properly lubricated. If your drip trays accumulate more than a tablespoon of grease or ice cream per week, your shell bearing or drive shaft seal likely needs replacement. Any degree of “mushrooming” or visible deformation on the bearing is a clear sign it should be replaced immediately.
